Pioneer In Public Health

This week it was our pleasure to shine the spotlight on Dr. Lane Ormand, a distinguished Monroe resident and fellow Kiwanian.

Dr. Ormand, a 1958 alumnus of UNC Chapel Hill, has a notable professional background that includes Langley Air Force Base, Monroe Women’s Clinic, and the Health Department. As Union County's first board-certified OB/GYN specialist, he was instrumental in establishing the county's High-Risk Maternity Clinic.  Over the course of his decades in practice, Dr. Ormand delivered a sizable percentage of the babies born in Union County.

Dr. Ormand is honored as a Distinguished Medical Alumnus by the UNC School of Medicine.  In 2016, he received the Order of the Long Leaf Pine, the highest honor awarded by North Carolina Governors for persons who have made significant contributions to the state and their communities through exemplary service and exceptional accomplishments.  The Monroe Women's Clinic was renamed The Orman Center for Women in his honor.  He is praised by state health officials as a model for physicians serving rural areas.

As we all listened intensely, Dr. Ormand enthusiastically expressed his passion for medicine and the technological advancements he has witnessed over the years. He was emotional when he emphasized the importance of physicians remaining committed to their purpose, ensuring every patient receives the time and attention they need and deserve.
